Puu Poa # 411

Guest Rating:

Vacation rental condominium. Sleeps 4, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. No pets allowed.

Princeville, HI 96722 United States

This unique penthouse unit sits on an ocean bluff and overlooks a stunning, world famous panorama, from 1000-foot waterfalls cascading down the Bali Hai mountains to the south, to secluded Hideaways Beach and reef below you, to waves crashing on the rocks of the Queen’s Bath to the north. The view is unparalleled, and only a few units in the complex have one as nice as this. With our enclosed solarium and top floor location, this unit is the largest one that offers that view.
Trade winds float through the condo providing natural cooling, and each of the main rooms has a quiet ceiling fan and 10 to 18 foot ceilings with recessed lighting on dimmers. The unit is bright, with windows in every room. The living room is topped with a high clerestory that bathes the room with light and provides an extra sense of spaciousness and climate regulation available only in the penthouse units. Our solarium (not all penthouse units have one) is always bright, even during the rain squalls Kauai is known for. The front door opens into this welcoming solarium, in contrast to several neighboring units where the outer door opens onto an open unroofed lanai before one can enter the unit.
The bathrooms feature premium fixtures with detachable showerheads, deluxe one-piece toilets, wood cabinetry and granite countertops and trim. The master bath has an oversized walk-in shower with two showerheads and a glass block wall facing toward the sea, so you can see the sparkling ocean even from your shower. The master bath has two sinks and a deep, full-length whirlpool bath. The second bathroom is spacious and includes a washer and dryer in an annexed closet. The unit is provided with a surplus of bath towels and beach towels for the ocean and pool.
The master bedroom features an ocean view, a king bed, plenty of closet space, and a television and DVD player. The room can be made more private by closing accordion shutters onto the solarium if desired.
The kitchen is recently remodeled in granite and wood cabinetry and new appliances, and it is fully equipped with utensils, pots and pans, dinner flatware, dishes and glassware. The refrigerator provides through-the-door ice and water. The dining room adjoins the kitchen, affording both casual counter seating and a more formal dining area with an expandable table and 6 chairs.
The living room is luxuriously furnished with extended sofa, loveseat, koa wood furniture, a personal stereo with iPod/iPhone hookup, and a large, fully cable-connected high-definition flat screen television with BluRay DVD player. The solarium contains upholstered rattan furniture, a breakfast table, a whale-watching scope and an antique Chinese cabinet. The unit offers guests a variety of music CDs, movie DVDs, popular books, board games and jigsaw puzzles. Original artwork by Arius Hopman, Brad Dawber and other artists is displayed on the walls. Large folding shutters facing the lanai can be closed to limit sun exposure if desired. This complex is constructed of concrete, so you do not hear occupants in neighboring units through the walls.
A computer desk and work area shares the view and is fully equipped for laptop computers and phone calls if needed.
The large, newly furnished lanai is oriented to the WNW with wing walls on either side. Since this is a penthouse unit, there is no one above you, which affords complete privacy. The lanai has a BBQ, multiple chaises, exterior lighting and an umbrella-covered glass table, giving you an unsurpassed dining view. The lanai closet contains a complete set of beach furniture, and multiple snorkel sets are available for guest use.
Mobile telephones throughout the unit, plus wired and/or mobile phone extensions in the master bedroom and second bedroom, provide unlimited free long distance service within the United States. DSL high-speed internet access and 802.11N secured Wi-Fi wireless access is available in all rooms and on the lanai.
Over the past several years, we have upgraded our unit with top-of-the-line equipment, including a high efficiency washer and dryer, & dishwashe

We decided to stay here for 3 nights to end our honeymoon. We were in absolute awe as soon as we walked through the door. The condo is kept in immaculate shape. The private linai is incredible. No A.C. no problem. Sleep with the windows open and you can hear the waves crashing on the beach. The tradewinds keep the condo a nice temp at night so sleeping wasn't an issue for us. Many cool spots to eat and shop nearby. Would love to come back at some point in the future. Be sure to hike down to hide-a-way beach down below! The trail to get down is on the far side of the tennis courts!

Only the unit next door (412) will have a better view of Mt. Makana ("Bali Hai"). This was our second stay in Pu'u Po'a in four trips to Kauai. The 2 mile run or walk to Princeville Center is good exercise along the immaculate grounds of the neighborhoods and golf course. There you'll find groceries, coffee, restaurants, a bank, shops, etc. The condo is next door to the St. Regis Princeville, a great choice for a breakfast splurge with even more spectacular views. The trail down to Hideaways Beach is definitely adventurous for most people, but it's a nice little secluded beach with pretty good snorkeling on lower surf days. An alternative is to walk along the left side of the Princeville to its beach. The condo is quite large. It gets hot quickly if the sliding doors and windows are closed (which they should be when you're out due to the constant threat of rain), but the condo cools off quickly with cross breezes. We had a minor issue with the tub drain that was resolved immediately by the management. Overall we would definitely book this condo again. Our only gripe is that the grassy area in front of the condo is not very accessible, with gates labelled "maintenance only". The pool is basic but perfect, and rarely had anyone there during our visit (late September). The drive to Hanalei is short -- we can recommend Peddle and Paddle for SUP rentals, and Kayak Kauai (surfboard rentals) provided exemplary customer service, refunding our money when we got in over our heads on a big surf day. Buy some fish in Hanalei and grill it on the patio. Everything was pretty much as advertised with this condo, book it with confidence.

Gorgeous views & a fully equipped beautiful rental! The only complaint is that we would have preferred a place with easier beach access. We have a 19 year old son with special needs, and balance & coordination are a bit of an issue for him. We were able to make it down the trail once, however it was challenging and we didn't feel comfortable trying it again.

This condo was in a great location on the north shore. Easy drive to Hanalei for paddle boarding or hanging at the beach and a short ride to the grocery store to stock your fridge. You couldn't beat the views from the lanai and the space was set up beautifully. Beds were comfortable and it was very clean. Enough space that our family of 4 could spread out or hang together and take in the beauty of this island and the comfort of the condo. Highly recommend!

The unit is perfect for a family and the views from this unit are spectacular. Puu Poa 411 was very clean and is has everything you need in the kitchen and laundry room. Although there isn't AC, the only time it felt hot was right when we entered the unit. There are great breezes to cool it down. Even when you shut it up to leave for the day, it cools down very quickly when you open the windows. It is very large and there is great storage/closet space. The entire area was very quiet and we never heard our neighbors. There are beach toys/chairs/etc in lanai closet and there are 4 beach towels in the 2nd bathroom. The beach towels have seen a lot of action and are a touch small though. Overall, I can't say enough great things about this unit. Rather than make our own coffee, we would walk over to the St. Regis Resort and get fantastic coffee and pastries from their bakery each day.

We had a great vacation despite the fact the refrigerator in our unit died the second day of the trip. Mandy and Rob from Princeville Vacations were amazing. They brought ices chests and ice for our food and eventually moved us to another unit at a lower price. The team at Princeville vacations is amazing.

Being on the top floor offers best outdoor privacy and great views. Occasional cigar smoke from neighboring patio. Clean and fully equipped with everything you'd need for meal preparation. Slight musty smell upon arrival but cleared up with all windows opened. Nice walk to St Regis Hotel. Mandy was very helpful with any questions plus called to warn us of high surf advisory. Very spacious...jacuzzi bath was great after day of Napali Coast hiking!

Our time at Puu Poa 411 was terrific. As the photos indicate the views are terrific but was especially appreciated were the amenities that were included. The home is nicely appointed and stocked with all the things you would need for your stay. We really appreciated the beach chairs, beach umbrellas, snorkel gear, boogie boards and coolers available to us. It made our trips to the beach that much more enjoyable.

Great location. Spectacular views. Well maintained unit. The upper story lanai was very private, however occasionally there was smoke from other units' BBQs drifting in through the open doors. We especially enjoyed leaving the doors open at night so we could hear the crashing surf. On Saturday night of our one week stay there was a noisy party in the unit below us that lasted into the early hours of the morning. Mandy was very helpful when I notified her of the problem. Overall, a great condo. We would definitely stay here again.

Elegant & convenient for a family of four. Great location with a view of the ocean from many areas of the condo, including the master bed room. Except for one night, we cooked dinner every night of our seven night stay here & we weren't lacking any required kitchen appliance; felt very much 'at home'. Closet in the lanai had all recreational equipment our family needed - beach chairs, tarp, umbrellas, boogie boards. There was some snorkeling gear as well, but we chose to rent instead of using it. Great place overall & if we go back to Kauai again, this will be the preferred rental for us. When we checked in to the condo it was mid day on a sunny day and the sun room was very hot which had me a bit concerned; however, we figured out that by leaving the windows in the sun room & the main door open and the cross ventilation made it very pleasant to sit there - which is what we did whenever we were home during the day.

We spent a long time searching for a nice place in north Kauai and we found a great one in 411 Pu'u Po'a! Pluses: It's huge with both a sunroom and a very large lanai. The view of Bali Hai from 411 is amazing. We took hundreds of photos of that scenery over our 2.5 weeks (sunsets, moonsets, storms, clear blue skies, rainbows, etc.) The kitchen was well equipped and large with great views. Fans in every major room. The dining table was huge and overall the unit seating was plentiful. The lanai was very private (no unit above us). The shower in the master bath was huge! A large washer/dryer, internet access, and lots of surfers to watch from the lanai. The closet on the lanai was stuffed with beach toys which came in very helpful. Very close to the Makai Princeville gold course (a beautiful layout!) If you drive to the end of the road north you will have to cross 10 1-lane bridges, but you get to hiking trails (one as short as 0.5 miles) that will give you tremendous views of the Na Pali coast. Issues: No elevator so dragging that 50 lb suitcase up/down several floors when checking in/out was a challenge. No dresser in the 2nd BR so had to use small drawers in the 2nd bathroom. Surprisingly few mirrors in the unit. No ceiling fan in the sunroom which becomes an issue in the late afternoon on a clear sky. The closest beach can be seen partially from the lanai; but the hike down to the very small beach requires a sherpa and good insurance (but that keeps it uncrowded). Try Anini Beach about 5 miles south instead. The location in Princeville was wetter than other parts of the island. Location: The day we drove to the Waimea Canyon lookout, then to Spouting Horn and back to our condo, we put 150 miles on our car and the drive to the Kapaa/Waipouli area for nice restaurants is tedious. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in 411.

The condo was nicely updated, very spacious, and perched atop one of the more amazing views in the country. It had everything we needed for our stay. The beach below the property is beautiful, but the path down is extremely steep and muddy and you will not want to do it more than once a day- certainly not while pregnant or with small children (although we saw some people who did).

This property was more than advertised-location was amazing and the size of the unit was very comfortable and accommodating. While all coastal properties fight a constant battle with the elements, we were pleasantly surprised and impressed with the overall condition of the Puu Poa complex as well as #411 (just a few minor things here and there with the unit in terms of upkeep but we were expecting this given the contant assault from the elements). We were not sure how things would go with the no A/C but with the exception of one day-the unit was actually very comfortable and breezy. The redo of the tennis court was a nice and welcome surprise. Lori at PV was great to work with and we expect to be repeat visitors for years to come.

A big Mahalo to the Owners, Lori and the Puu Poa management.

The condo is exactly as pictured. Beautiful with wonderful kitchen and lanai. All rooms well-appointed and whale watching was great. Please note that the few steps pictured within the condo are not the reason this property is marked as Handicap accessible: No. Each of the condos in this complex is in a separate building. There are 3 sets of stairs required to enter this 4th floor condo. There is no common area and there is no elevator. The stairs were not mentioned anywhere in the description. The parking lot is not well lit at night. The view is great but the climb is difficult if you have any mobility issues. If that’s not your issue, you’ll love the place!

The condo was well appointed with just about everything we needed during our stay. Loved having a gas grill to cook our meals right on the lanai while watching the surfers below. The trail down to Hideaways Beach below is a bit sketchy but well worth it. We love the north shore and would definitely stay here again!! Great condo!!

Enjoyed the convenience of being close to the three towns and the Princeville golf course. This area had many sights and beach areas to offer. Of the three Islands we visited my family thought Kauai suited them the best. Loved Ono ono's shaved ice in the town near by.

The perfect condo with the perfect view. Everything beautifully updated & loving Hawaiian details throughout, from the vintage Hawaiian airline coffee mugs to the framed old Hawaiian maps on the walls. Gorgeous kitchen, modern bathrooms, large, generous bedrooms. A short stroll to the St. Regis for a sunset cocktail. This condo is worth every penny!

We have stayed several times at Puu Poa. The views are the best in this complex. You have an ideal perch from which to watch the surfers and whales when conditions are right. The views extend to Bali Hai.

The owner uses 411 and therefore you have great comfort and attention to detail. For instance, they have a desk with a built-in power strip for those who cannot be separated from their electronic devices or for those whose business does not stop while on vacation.

The furniture is not uncomfortable "condo" furniture. The sofas are cushy and provide comfort. The TV is quite large and Redbox is available at the Foodland. An iHome music station was a nice touch.

The beds and linens are very comfortable and the towels in the bathroom were also nic. The bathrooms were also satisfying. The master has a nice soaking tub.

As I am a very lucky man to have a wife that loves to cook, I was delighted to find a kitchen that is well stocked with everything needed to prepare our Christmas dinner of roast tenderloin of beef. To quote my wife, "when you stay in a rental that has a Cuisinart mini-chopper, that is pretty cool".

We contacted Lori at Princeville Vacations to arrange cleaning midway through our two week stay. Lori arranged this without hassle (not always possible with other agents who work on island time). Tracy is the housekeeper who showed up on time and did a fantastic job. When you arrive at 411, you will not feel the need to remove previous tenants’ germs as can be the case with many rentals.

The only concern that I have is the temperature of the condo during the summer months. The Puu Poa condos have two lanais.

This is a great condo. Princeville Vacations was efficient and pleasant. I would return in a heartbeat.

A well located property on the north shore with great views, comfortable furnishings, and well equipped kitchen. The trail to the nearest beach is tough but well worth the hike up and down.

The Puu Poa condominiums are the best we have stayed at in Kauai. The location, with fabulous views of the Na Pali coast, is superb. Our favorite snorkeling beach, Hideaways, is just below the complex. The #411 unit (and #409, which is actually our very favorite) is on the top level, providing quiet along with the views. Wonderful amenities (big flat screen, Blu-ray player, iPod player), beautiful furnishings, and complete appliances (yes, a blender for your fruity drinks). The only things keeping this from a full 5-star rating: the toilet bobber design in both bathrooms is poor, and often you have to fuss with it to keep them from running; someone left the grill valve open and their was no propane (maintenance should check); few kitchen supplies (we had to buy coffee filters). But hey, this is still the best!

The 2-bedroom condo was large with two living room areas so there was plenty of room for everyone. We were traveling with two teenagers. The formal living room was furnished with comfy sofas and a large 50” flat screen TV with blue ray DVD player. The sunroom had it’s own seating area including a round glass table for four. The sunroom and lanai has amazing view of Bali Hai. It was fun to sit at different table locations for our meals when we dined in.

The open kitchen is nicely equipped with top quality appliances and gadgets. It was nice to have a 4-slice toaster among the items.

The large lanai had enough room for a patio table for four, two lounge chairs and gas grill. There is a storage room that holds the beach chairs (we didn't discover that one of the chairs was broken until we got to the beach), boogie boards without the straps and snorkel gear with mouth piece detached from the masks so I rented snorkel gear for the teens.

The complex has a great pool that faces the ocean that is really nice.

    Tiny issues we encountered:

There was only one hair blower in the unit and it was broken. I finally got it to work if I pushed the reset button but the on/off button was clearly broken.

There was a nice CD machine in the living room area but I couldn’t figure out how to use it. It would be nice if instructions were left or sent by property management via email.

One of the patio screens kept falling off the rails so after my husband fixed it we just avoided using it.

The toilet sometimes kept running so you had to jiggle the mechanism to have it stop.

Password that was given to us about 4 months ago didn’t work in the key lockbox.

Despite small inconveniences we would come here again. We did really enjoy our stay.

We had a wonderful week at Puu Poa #411. The condo was beautiful and had everything we needed and more. We spent every morning on the lanai watching the surfers and enjoying our coffee. The sunsets are incredible!

As with some online bookings in places you have not traveled to before, you take a leap of faith. This property did not disappoint. It was clean, safe and quiet. The view from lanai was great and the property was thoughtfully furnished with the things that helped us get the most relaxation out of the experience. We would stay here again.
